Periodontal regeneration

Before periodontal regenerationAfter periodontal regenerationThe option to regenerate the lost periodontal attachment is the 'holy grail' of therapy. While our modern techniques and materials are not foolproof, regenerative procedures have developed over the years and have become more predictable.

Not all sites exhibiting attachment loss are good candidates for regenerative procedures and research has proven that areas showing vertical bone loss and some furcation lesions respond most positively. Here you see some images of cases I have personally treated.

Materials

These days there are several materials available for regenerative surgery. Some of them are of animal origin and research has shown them to be safe and more predictable. One that I particularly favour is Emdogain.

Predictability

Due to the complex nature of such regenerative procedures, success cannot be guaranteed. The clinical experience of the operator influences the outcome.

Long-term stability

Research has comfirmed that regenerated periodontal tissue is as resistant to further breakdown as non-diseased tissue.
